END TO END PROCESS REVIEW OF CARGO

Overview

Heathrow’s cargo facilities have been an under-invested part of the business for decades.  A change in strategic direction will see investment towards the cargo area, and master plans are already underway.  To inform part of the master plan, and to support today’s operations in lieu of new facilities and capacity being built, LMCG staff were commissioned to lead a process review of the ‘end to end’ cargo journey through the generation 1 (1960’s landside facilities) and generation 2 facility (British Airways World Cargo Centre, on airside boundary).

Approach

  • After engaging with the cargo community our team produced level 1 & 2 process maps of the end to end cargo journey.

  • Data for journey split times was manually collected, and value stream maps created.

  • Process bottle-necks and associated root causes were identified.

  • Demand and capacity data was analysed to review current and future requirements.

Outcome

  • The journey time difference between generation 1 & 2 was produced, and bottle-neck waiting times quantified.

  • Security screening facilities (control posts) were identified as the main bottleneck for generation 1, caused by several internal processing problems.

  • Improvement opportunities were given to current operations for implementation, and learning fed into the master plan.
